INtroduction
The National Library of Algeria is the main state library in the country. It houses around ten million items, among them manuscripts, rare books, periodicals, and others.
The library is open from 8:30am to 8:30pm and the Manuscript Department from 9am to 5pm.

GOING THERE
The National Library is located in central Algiers. Take Metro Line 1 and disembark at the Jardin d’Essai Station, which is just a one-minute walk from the library. If you're coming from the upper part of the city, you can also reach the library via the urban cableway. Additionally, Bus No. 4 passes by the library. However, the most practical options are the metro or local VTC services, similar to Uber (note that Uber does not operate in Algeria). If you come by car, there is an underground parking at the National Library.
GETTING IN
Bring your passport with you, as there is a security check at the entrance. At the Manuscript Department’s reception desk, you will be asked to provide your passport, an official letter from your university stating your research purpose, and a student ID if you are a student. After that, you will receive a pass that is valid for the duration of the visit specified in the application form.
Finding your material
In the Manuscript Department, there is a series of computers that hold the main catalog, as well as a collection of searchable files from the ongoing cataloging process, showcasing manuscripts that are not yet in the official catalog.
Note that not all manuscripts are cataloged yet.
Ordering your material
Once you find your manuscript in the catalog (that is, if it is not already digitized or if you need to access the physical manuscript), obtaining access will require permission from the Manuscript Department. Gaining access will depend on the conservation status of the material. Please note that access is not guaranteed.
Ordering scans
If the manuscript is digitized, either completely or partially, you can access the images and immediately receive a copy of them for free. Ask the librarians of the Manuscript Department.
Food and well-being
There is a cafeteria on the ground floor that serves small meals and beverages. Please bring cash as they do not accept cards. Outside, on the same street, there are small grocery stores, but you can also take Metro Line 1 to reach central downtown (just four stops away) which has significantly more eating options.
Additional remarks
The building is modern, adapted for people with reduced mobilities, and pleasant to work in. But don’t plan for a short stay since finding your material can take time. About one week should be enough to complete your research.
