LIBRARY OF THE ORIENT-INSTITUT ISTANBUL

INtroduction

The Library of the Orient-Institut Istanbul is a scientific research library with an emphasis on the study of the Ottoman Empire, the Republic of Turkey in all aspects (linguistical, historical, literature and social sciences) and, to a lesser extent, of the Turkic languages and literatures of Central Asia.

The library is open Monday through Thursday between 10am and 7pm,  and on Fridays between 9am and 1pm.

GOING THERE

From Karaköy, go for a ten minute walk uphill or take the tünel to the Beyoglu Station and walk back to the Orient-Institut. You can also take the underground metro, M2. To do so, get out at Sishane Station and take the exit towards Istiklal Street. From here, it’s a three minutes walk to the Orient-Institut.

GETTING IN

Accessing the library of the Orient-Institut is fairly straightforward: just leave your ID-card with the security at the entrance and enter the library.

Finding your material

Finding your material is equally straightforward. The collections of the library of the Orient-Institut has been catalogued online, and can be accessed here.

Ordering your material

Beware that you need to order your material minimum one day prior to your visit. To do so, send an email to oiibib@oiist.org and list the shelf marks of the items you wish to look at. This is also possible directly from the online catalog.

Ordering scans

You are allowed to scan yourself by using the onsite scanner. However, beware of copy-right restrictions on certain items and take care not to damage any fragile material. Don’t forget to bring your own USB-stick.

Food and well-being

There are numerous cafes and restaurants at various price ranges in the immediate vicinity in Beyoglu.
